On October 4th, 2018, faculty researchers from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) organized the 2nd Workshop on Emerging Contaminants and Water Treatment Technologies at the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) in Totowa, New Jersey. This workshop further received support from the Research Technology Transfer Committee of the American Water Works Association New Jersey Section (AWWA NJ RTTC), which facilitated approval of credits for continuing education (PDH/CEU). Keynote speakers were invited from the water resources, water supply, and wastewater community including the New Jersey State Departments of Health and of Environmental Protection, Professional Engineers, academia, and nongovernmental agencies.  Twelve representatives presented their research on various topics ranging from health effects,  pollutant monitoring, detection, and treatment of regulated and emerging water contaminants. This year there was an incredible number of participants,  over 60 with faculty and students from NJIT, Rutgers, Montclair State University, Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Delaware.  Dr. Wen Zhang began with the introductions and acknowledgments of the workshop organizers, speakers, and partners, including a special guest speaker from the China Academy of Sciences. PVWC Executive Director, Joseph Bella, PVWC laboratory manager, Dr. David Pranitis and PVWC superintendent, Wendy Simone, gave the welcoming and closing remarks and hosted a plant tour of the advanced surface water treatment technologies at the plant to highlight the importance of innovative scientific research.  Paul Schorr, P.E., and Dr. Lucia Rodriguez-Freire presided the morning and afternoon session respectively. Moreover, workshop participants mingled and networked through student posters.
