Congratulations to Leqi Lin for successfully defending her master’s thesis!
On April 16, 2020, Leqi Lin successfully defend her master’s thesis with precious support from the committee members, Dr. Wen Zhang (thesis advisor), Dr. Eonsoo Lee, Dr. Taha Marhaba and Dr. Lucia Rodriguez-Freire (thesis co-advisor). Leqi’s research focuses on “Recovery of Valuable Metals from Spent-Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using Organic Acids: Assessment of Techno-Economic Feasibility”. This study focused on the assessment of a hydrometallurgy process with a novel organic acid as a leachant, Organic Aqua Regia (OAR), to leach and recover Li and Co from the LiCoO2 type spent-LIBs. The study investigated with different reaction temperature, reaction time, the concentration of H2O2, the concentration of OAR and pulp density, respectively. Moreover, an LCA analysis was conducted for the emission and cost comparisons during the hydrometallurgy process with OAR, which will provide new insight into the sustainable recovery practices for spent LIBs. We gratefully acknowledge funding support from EPA Pollution Prevention (P2) grant (Grant No. NP96259118); NJIT Undergraduate Research Innovation (URI) phase I and II grants; 2018 NAME Green Technology Scholarship.
