On July 14th, 2020, Prof. Wen Zhang’s team received their third granted US patent entitled “Microfluidic Cell For Atomic Force Microscopy” issued by United States Patent and Trademark Office (Patent No.: US 10,712,365 B2). Dr. Wanyi Fu, the former Ph.D. student in Zhang’s group led the major experimental work and design of this patent. This invention of a new liquid cell enables in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) observation and measurement of fouling phenomena during fluid filtration on membrane, which is rarely reported or studied due to the lack of proper instrumentation. This liquid cell allows for real-time and in situ observations and measurements of membrane properties and surface properties during fluid filtration such as fouling and/or aging processes.
