Dr. Zhang’s research group recently received two United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)’s People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Program Phase 1 Awards to support the research of Induction-Surface-Heating Membrane Distillation and Microwave-Catalytic Membrane for PFAS Degradation.

These two membrane research projects focus on innovation of membrane surface functionalization via interfacial engineering to enhance transfer efficiencies (e.g., water vapour and molecules), catalytic reactions for pollutant degradation or desalination and ultimately a cost-efficient and sustainable desalination and water purification. The two projects particularly aim to involve undergraduate students from diverse majors or disciplines such as environmental engineering, chemical engineering and chemistry. Engaging undergraduate students and training them to develop core skills in interdisciplinary research and problem solving are essential components of these two EPA P3 projects besides the fundamental research.
